Passport Chip Paper WPCS

Following the UK’s departure from the EU—after Brexit—the Welsh Pony and Cob Society (WPCS) is unable to legally issue passports for Welsh ponies and cobs located in EU member states.

However, the Society is aware that WPCS members and breeders from EU countries wish to continue supporting the dam studbook and to continue safeguarding the breed’s characteristics for future generations. That is why the WPCS is working on a solution to enable those breeders to continue registering their ponies.

The Society is in ongoing discussions with the Government of Wales, as the legislative authority for the passport, to explore ways to enable the registration in the WPCS Herd Book of animals not born or based in the UK.

We understand that, in these uncertain times, breeders want quick answers to their questions. The WPCS offers the reassurance that every effort is being made to find a promising future.

As soon as an agreement is reached regarding the feasibility, practical, and legal aspects, the Society will announce it.

In the meantime, breeders from EU countries must apply for passports for their Welsh ponies, Cobs, and part-breds through a subsidiary association in the country of origin.

WPCS Statement:
Overseas Registrations

A statement in response to inquiries from non-UK breeders of Welsh ponies, cobs, and their crossbreeds.

Following the UK’s departure from the EU, in the post-Brexit era, the Welsh Pony and Cob Society is unable to legally issue passports for Welsh ponies and cobs domiciled in EU member states.

However, with an eye toward those WPCS members and breeders within EU countries who wish to continue supporting the parent Society and to ensure the cohesive preservation of the purebred gene pool for future generations, the Society is working on a plan to enable those breeders to continue registering their dogs.

The Society has been in ongoing discussions with the Welsh Government, as the legislator responsible for the Passport program, to explore ways to ensure that animals not based or bred in the UK can continue to be registered and recorded in the Welsh Stud Book.

While we understand the frustration of breeders who would like a quick answer to their questions during these uncertain times, the WPCS would like to reassure them that every effort is being made to find a sustainable way forward.
An announcement will be made as soon as the feasibility, practical, and legal aspects have been agreed upon.

In the meantime, breeders in EU countries should register their Welsh ponies, Cobs, and Partbreds with the daughter societies in their country of origin.
