Prestigious Silver Medal for Springbourne Capricorn

Gerrit van Beek was in for a huge surprise on Saturday, October 16, at the Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells. During the WPCS Official Autumn Sale, he went to the WPCS office to pay his membership fee when a small box was brought out. Inside was a Silver Medal that his Springbourne Capricorn had earned at the South Yorkshire Welsh Show on July 18, 2021.

Van Beek is a bit flabbergasted see the Silver Medal he just won. “I immediately sent a photo to my wife, Leny,” he says proudly. He turns the silver medal over, and sure enough, his stallion’s name is engraved there, along with the name of the show where the stallion won this medal. This is quite special, because not many silver medals are awarded—and certainly not to Dutch owners.

Springbourne Capricorn, a Welsh Section A stallion approved by the NWPCS, owned by Gerrit and Leny van Beek and leased to the Kilbey family of Idyllic Stud achieves one success after another in his home country. On May 23 of this year, he was named Reserve Section A Champion at the Bucks Counties Spectacular Show. This is a WPCS Rosette show, where no medals can be awarded.

Medal Shows

In order to be authorized to award WPCS Silver or Bronze Medals, organizations must meet many different requirements and, in addition, pay a substantial fee for these medals. This lends a certain prestige to the show. There is only one show where Gold Medals can be won, and that is the Royal Welsh.

On June 5, Springbourne Capricorn becomes section champion at the Midlands Counties Show, a Bronze Medal Show. The South Yorkshire Welsh Show on July 18 is a Silver Medal Show. Capricorn once again becomes section champion there. He receives only the Silver Medal, since, according to WPCS rules, a pony may win only one medal per year.

On August 22, at the EWPCA Silver Medal Summer Show, Springbourne Capricorn was once again crowned Section A champion. However, the Silver Medal goes to the reserve champion, Wensley Magic Touch, because Capricorn already has a medal. Medals are awarded only to champions and reserve champions.
