Shabon and Big Spender Kick Off the 2021 NWPCS Foal Season
First foals of 2020: Schimorteras Shabon and Warmtebrons Big Spender
With two colt foals born and registered in the (early) morning of Friday, January 29, the NWPCS kicks off the 2021 foaling season. The foals are NWR Schimortera’s Shabon and Welsh B Warmtebron’s Big Spender.
Schimortera's Shabon
“This is going to be a lot of posts,” Marian Ronda writes on her Facebook. ”Our first home-bred Shadok son has been born. He’ll be making a lot of appearances.”
Ronda is the breeder of Schimortera’s Shabon, a son of the studbook stallion Anjershof Shadok (by Jonkers’ Jayden) and the “ster” mare Boszicht’s Bonita (Verona’s Bo-Gi x Coelenhage’s Purioso). As a four-year-old, Bonita was crowned champion at the regional inspection in Heteren.
Shabon was born on January 29, 2021, at 2:15 a.m. His breeders, the Ronda family, also own the breeding stallion Anjershof Shadok, who is competed in dressage by their daughter Kasia. Last year, the pair placed second in the Pluvinel Young Talent Competition for four-year-old ponies, among other achievements. The first foals by this young gray stallion were born last year.
Warmtebron’s Big Spender
A few hours later, the second NWPCS-registered foal of the year was born alive. “This morning at 7:30, when we went to feed them, Mona Lisa was still eating as usual, but we could already tell it wouldn’t be long. We were having breakfast around 8:30 when we saw on the camera that she was lying down and immediately started pushing. We hurried to the stable, and by the time we got there, the foal was already out. It was a super-fast birth,” says Tineke van der Weerd.
Warmtebron’s Big Spender is a son of the studbook stallion Spring Dreams Romance (by Stougjeshoeve Escudo) and the crown mare Warmtebron’s Mona Lisa (Warmtebron’s Hielke x Warmwell Pageboy). Born in 2008, Mona Lisa has already won numerous championships, including the daily championship at the regional inspection in Heteren in 2011. Big Spender is her eighth foal.
“We normally never breed this early in the year, but since we sold the stallion Spring Dreams Romance at the stallion auction last year and Mona Lisa turned out to be in heat when she came home, we had her bred this early this time. Big Spender was born nineteen days past her due date, but that’s a perfectly normal gestation period for his mother,” says Tineke van der Weerd.
She adds, “Romance has now been sold to the United States.”
Foal registration
The birth of your foal can be notified via My Welsh. You must do this within 14 days of the birth. The mating is visible in most cases when you click on ‘Register foal’ in the Dashboard. This only applies when you have mated with an NWPCS approved stallion. If you are registering a foal by a non-NWPCS approved stallion, you will send the original stud insemination agreement from the relevant studbook by mail to the NWPCS studbook office. The details of the studbook office can be found at here.
If you have any questions about registering your foal, please contact the studbook office: click here
Once the foal is registered, you will receive a confirmation email detailing the process of sketching and chipping the foal.
