Best of Old Welsh: Maestir Odyssey Wins by a Wide Margin in Round 3 of Voting

Maestir Odyssey won the third round of the ‘Cutest Old Welsh Pony or Cob’ contest by a landslide. The 27-year-old Welsh Section A studbook stallion received 189 of the 337 votes.

Maestir Odyssey is the third finalist in this contest. Jannes Kemink’s “Stephanie” came in second with 80 votes, followed by Windhoek’s “Hermien” with 47 votes and Ciejan’s “Wander” with 21 votes.

Description
Odyssey is the king of the barn, and he likes to be treated that way. For example, he always wants to be the first to go outside. Odyssey is a real showboss. He won many championships, including at the Royal Welsh and the international show. At age 25 he was again approved by the Welsh studbook. Here he placed third in his class, leaving many younger stallions behind him. Meanwhile, he is 27 and still nails it. Foals are expected from him again next year.

Windhoek’s Hermien was born in 1998, so she is now 22 years old. Through her dam, the champion mare Windhoeks Leonie, Hermien also traces her lineage back to the imported mare Cathlu of Spalding. Hermien has perhaps proven herself to be Stal Windhoek’s best broodmare. At one point, there were four beautiful, breed-typical daughters of Hermien: Windhoek’s Sanne, Wiske, Veerle, and Camille—all sired by different stallions and all successful at inspections. Hermien herself is also Keur and Preferent. She had her last foal in 2018.

This photo shows our old pony, Ciejan’s Wander, who is now 26 years old. Last year, we gave him to some friends, where he’s now teaching their grandchildren to ride, haha. My daughter rode Wander—also known as Wannie—for three years in the Bixie class and earned a point in dressage. They went on lots of trail rides and visited the beach. Wannie is a gem of a pony. He’ll go down in our family’s history as a truly top-notch pony who’s still in great shape.
