‘Owner Seeks Rider’ helps you find the right match!

There are about 450,000 horses and approximately 500,000 riders in the Netherlands, 50,000 of whom are active in competitive sports. You’d think there’d be plenty of choice. Yet it sometimes proves difficult for breeders to find a suitable, talented rider who can train their offspring. And so, high-quality horses and ponies graze in the pastures, while at the same time there are ambitious young riders without a suitable horse.

What a waste of potential on both sides! That was the view of the organizers of the national program ‘Owner Seeks Rider,’ which was launched under the auspices of the Koepel Fokkerij.

The goal is to create the best possible matches between horses and riders across various disciplines. The plan in a nutshell: through regional programs, breeders and owners are supported by pairing their horses and ponies with suitable riders, who in turn are guided by professionals. Through this collaboration, both parties can help each other achieve their goals at various levels: from breaking in a horse to competitive performance at a high level, or training in preparation for the sale of the horse or pony. But broader training for recreational riding or aptitude tests, for example, may also be among the possibilities, depending on the owner’s needs. The regional teams coordinate, match, support, and guide the initial pairing of rider and horse or pony. The program then follows the process through which the pair develops together. For example, the pair may participate in frequent training sessions and be monitored by the program. The owner and rider enter into an agreement with each other so that all participants are clear on the terms, including financial arrangements. A legal advisor is also affiliated with the program and can provide additional customized advice upon request. If desired, the program can also assist with the eventual sale of the horse or pony.
