Sunrise

Last weekend, Alfred Askes passed the baton for the ‘The Founding Mare’ column to Fré Kuper of Stal Cordial. Kuper answers five questions about the Welsh Section A foundation mare Sunrise. Fré Kuper: “Her daughter, Cordial’s Nina, was very special to us. She gave us the approved stallion Cordial’s Torino. Another highlight was in 2004, when we took Sunrise’s breeding group to the inspection in Stadskanaal and then to the CMK in Kootwijk.”

Five Questions About Sunrise

1 What are her main achievements?

  • 1988: Stadskanaal Foal Champion
  • 1990: Youth Champion and 4th place in the CK
  • 1991: Best 3-Year-Old in Stadskanaal
  • 1992: 1st place in the 4-year-old class and Star at the CK
  • 1993: 1st place among 5-year-olds and later Reserve Champion in Section A, 4th place in the CK

2 How and when did she come to you?

Fré: “We bought Sunrise as a yearling in 1989 from our friends Jan and Rika Ebels from Tweede Exloërmond.”

3 Can you talk briefly about some of the ponies in this mare line?

Fré: “Sunrise produced a total of fourteen foals, including many first-prize foals, four foal champions, and two day champions. Cordial’s Amber, Nikita, Sharon, and Da Vinci won championship titles (See the "Offspring" button above, ed.) and really stand out. Cordial’s Nina stands out the most. She is the dam of the studbook stallion Cordial’s Torino by Pinewell Bucks Fizz. Later, two more studbook stallions sired by Cordial’s Torino were approved: Cordial’s Charino and Cordial’s Cooper, followed by the studbook stallion Singelwouds Nassau, owned by Henk Wamelink, who is now the owner of Cordial’s Nina.”

4 Which stallions does she combine well with? And why?

Fré: “Churchwood President. He sired Cordial’s Nikita and Cordial’s Nina. Nikita was Foal Champion, Day Champion in Stadskanaal, and placed 1st at the CK. Nina was Foal Champion, Junior Champion, and Best 3-Year-Old at the CK. And Vechtzicht’s Cymro Bach. He sired Cordial’s Amber, who was named Foal Champion and Section A Champion in Stadskanaal. These ponies have achieved many successes, with Nikita and Amber competing in Germany in recent years.”

5 What makes Sunrise so special?

Fré: “As a foundation mare, she passed on a great deal of breed character and movement to her offspring, among whom Cordial’s Nina was very special to us. She gave us the approved stallion Cordial’s Torino. This stallion sired many beautiful offspring and two approved stallions (Cordial’s Charino and Cordial’s Cooper). Another highlight was in 2004, when we took her breeding group to the inspection in Stadskanaal and then to the CMK in Kootwijk. It’s also nice to mention that Cordial’s Torino, Cordial’s Charino, and Cordial’s Cooper, together with Cordial’s Concorde and Cordial’s Cornet, are pulling a four-in-hand for Rob and Dieneke Dijkhuis.”
