The Welsh A colt Oliebron’s Hyano is the first foal of 2020 registered with the NWPCS. The son of Blackblaze Cassino and Vechtzicht Hystar was born on January 14 and was assigned the registration number 202000001. “Yes, this foal was somewhat of a surprise,” says Arjen Holties, who co-bred the colt with Ton & Ria Schoorlemmer.

“Getting the mare pregnant was quite a struggle,” Holties explains. “As a result, she spent quite a while in the pasture with the stallion Blackblaze Cassiano. But anyway, at some point Cassiano had other mares to attend to, and Hystar eventually came into the stable to cover her. We had almost given up hope of getting the mare pregnant.”

‘I’ll just check it out anyway’

“Eventually, Vechtzicht’s Hystar was led out a few times when the veterinarian came to visit fellow breeders Ton and Ria to check a number of mares for pregnancy. We decided to check Hystar just in case, before she was ridden any further. And it turned out she was in foal. Thank goodness! However, it was anyone’s guess when the foal would be born. It didn’t really look like the mare was about to give birth at any moment. The mare was still out in the pasture—after all, it had been a mild winter. Then, when my father drove to work around 5:45 a.m., the foal was already there!’

“This is our first foal by this mare. Hystar is one of the last offspring of good old Vechtzicht’s Hylight. This newly born colt moves beautifully and has tremendous presence. We’re very happy with him!”

‘Hyano is a very special foal, since we’d been hoping for him for so long!’

“We’re still discussing which stallion to choose for next year, but personally, I’d love to breed a filly from the same pairing. Hyano is an especially special foal, since we’d been hoping for him for so long!”

Foal registration

The birth of your foal can be notified via My Welsh. You must do this within 14 days of the birth. The mating is visible in most cases when you click on ‘Register foal’ in the Dashboard. This only applies when you have mated with an NWPCS approved stallion. If you are registering a foal by a non-NWPCS approved stallion, you will send the original stud insemination agreement from the relevant studbook by mail to the NWPCS studbook office. The details of the studbook office can be found at here.

If you have any questions about registering your foal, please contact the studbook office: click here

Once the foal is registered, you will receive a confirmation email detailing the process of sketching and chipping the foal.
