At Fred and Wilma Venhuizen's Lakeway stable in Vries, the 30-year-old Welsh B mare Weltevreden's Manisa (by Roeland) passed away last week.

“We saw it coming,” responds Fred Venhuizen. “Yet that inevitable moment comes sooner than you would like. Together with our foundation dam Moorland's Nerthus, Manisa was the basis of our Welsh breeding which started in 1986.”

Gift from Father Emmens

The brown roan mare Weltevreden's Manisa (preferent) was bred by Wilma's father Willem Emmens out of Weltevreden's Happy Joy (by Twickel's Julius). Emmens gifted her as a yearling to Fred and Wilma Venhuizen.

Weltevreden's Manisa produced as many as 17 foals. “Many of them ended up in the sport,” said Venhuizen. “Two were competed in M jumping.”

Still at Lakeway Stables is Lakeway's Tessa (by Steehorst Showman), the now 25-year-old daughter of Manisa, whose 16 offspring are registered with the NWPCS.

Real children's pony

“Our children grew up with Manisa. She had a super good character and was therefore a real child's pony. She passed this good character on to her children. With her brown roan color she was a striking appearance in the pasture. She would always come to you for a snack. She was with us for 29 years, a long time. At Lakeway Stables we are going to miss Manisa,” concludes Venhuizen.
