At the Dutch Welsh Pony and Cob Studbook (NWPCS), starting in 2025, it will be possible for NWR stallions to enter the performance test via a side route. In addition to the regular route to registration as a studbook stallion, where stallions are immediately appointed to the performance test and complete it successfully, there is now also an option for voluntary participation in the performance test. This offers stallions and owners more flexibility and new opportunities to prove the stallion's qualities.

The voluntary survey

The voluntary examination offers a retake opportunity for stallions that have not fully successfully completed the regular selection. Stallions not appointed in the second viewing can still participate, provided they meet the following conditions:

  • Registration requirements according to the Central Stallion Inspection;
  • Participation in the second viewing of the Central Stallion Show;
  • Comply with current conformation standards and veterinary requirements.

After the voluntary examination, the stallion selection committee and the performance test committee will decide whether a stallion will be admitted to the performance test. The voluntary examination will take place on the same day as the first assessment day of the regular performance test. When a stallion is admitted, he will have the same status as stallions appointed through the regular route.

What does the voluntary research involve?

The voluntary survey consists of:

  1. Veterinary assessment: Here the stallion is assessed for walk and trot on hard ground, condition and a complete vaccination schedule. This assessment will be conducted by a veterinarian, the training director of the performance test and the chairman of the stallion inspection committee. The chairman makes the final decision on admission.
  2. Assessment under the saddle: The stallion will be presented under saddle on the same criteria as the referred stallions.

An opportunity for all stallions

Voluntary participation in the performance test offers owners the opportunity to re-present their stallion and showcase his qualities. Although voluntary participation may involve higher costs, it is a valuable route for owners who have confidence in their stallion. If the stallion is referred to the performance test, the cost of the voluntary examination is offset against the registration fee for the performance test. This new route gives a new chance to stallions who want to develop further and earn a place within the NWPCS.
