Health: Lyme disease

June 18, 2023

Lyme disease occurs not only in humans, but also in animals, such as ponies. It is caused by the bite of the Ixodes tick that is infected with the Borrelia bacteria. If a pony has Lyme disease, it can lead to severe symptoms and long-term health problems.

Symptoms

Symptoms of Lyme disease in ponies can vary, but may include:

  • Stiffness of muscles and/or joints
  • Reduced appetite
  • Fatigue or lethargy
  • Fever
  • Lameness
  • Sensitive or swollen lymph nodes
  • Muscle contractions or constant twitching

Consult a veterinarian immediately if you observe one or more of these symptoms in your pony.

Prevention

The best way to prevent Lyme disease in ponies is to prevent tick bites. Here are some tips to prevent your pony from being bitten by an infected tick:

  • Inspect your pony daily for ticks. Check the tail, mane, armpits, groin and neck.
  • Remove ticks immediately if you find them. Carefully pull out the tick with tick tweezers.
  • Use a tick repellent such as a spray. Get information about this from the veterinarian.

Diagnosis

A blood test helps determine if your pony has Lyme disease.

Treatment

If your pony has Lyme disease, the veterinarian may prescribe antibiotics to fight the Borrelia bacteria. The length of treatment depends on the severity of the infection. You may need to monitor your pony closely and/or follow-up treatment may be necessary. Rest and proper nutrition can also help your pony recover.
