The Royal Welsh champion Stougjeshoeve Escudo will soon leave for Australia. Breeder and owner Geert Verbaas sold him to Mark Bullen of Imperial Welsh Ponies. “Sometimes you have to make hard choices,” reports Verbaas on the Facebook page of Stougjeshoeve Stud. “Escudo is a very special stallion who made all our dreams come true.”

Verbaas writes on Facebook, “It started in 2012, where Escudo had a great season as a yearling. We then decided to go to the Royal Welsh Show (our first time). He finished first in his class, Youngstock Champion and Reserve Male Champion. As a three-year-old, we took him again and he placed second.

We showed him a few times as a 5- and 6-year-old and he was Supreme Champion at every County Show and Champion in Section B at the International show in Ermelo.

In 2018, we entered him again for the Royal Welsh Show. He won first in his class, Male Champion and Overall Champion section B. That wasn't all; he won the Tom & Sprightly Cup, the Cuddy Qualifier and finally Reserve Supreme at the Royal Welsh Show! We were overjoyed and couldn't believe it!

We had to go back in October to show him at The Horse of the Year show in Birmingham. We didn't know what to expect as we had never been there before. Escudo showed very well and became Reserve Champion Pony in hand of the Year.

He sired several fine foals, including the NWPCS Studbook stallions Spring Dreams Romance, Stougjeshoeve Armani and Stougjeshoeve Charmer. Also, a National Foal Champion and an Overall Supreme at the National.

Unable to use him enough on our own mares, we decided he deserved much more and the time had come to sell him.

Last Monday, quarantine began for Stougjeshoeve Escudo before he will fly to Australia, where he will begin a new chapter with Mark Bullen of Imperial Welsh Ponies.

Thank you Escudo, you are the most special pony, a once in a lifetime pony.”
