LTO Horse Farming Quick Scan on Animal Welfare
The sector is working hard to implement the Horse and Welfare Quality Mark. LTO Paardenhouderij developed a Quick Scan based on the requirements of the certification. This Quick Scan collects anonymous data from equestrian businesses to provide a reliable picture of the current state of horse welfare at Dutch businesses.
About 150 students from vocational and higher vocational education programs will collect data at various horse farms throughout the Netherlands.
We see various figures cited in the media regarding the welfare of horses in the Netherlands. These figures are often based on guesswork and assumptions. To prevent these figures from being taken as fact, LTO Paardenhouderij is using this Quick Scan to assess the actual situation.
Results
The students will be out in the field from March through July. Data will be collected centrally and analyzed after the summer. LTO Paardenhouderij expects to be able to present the results this fall.
