Neurological form of rhinopneumonia in the northwestern part of the province of Friesland
ERMELO (SRP) – The neurological form of rhinopneumonitis has been diagnosed at a location in the northwestern part of the province of Friesland. Two animals have since been euthanized. The horses currently at the location are not permitted to leave in the coming weeks, and no horses from outside the location will be admitted. The contact persons at the location and at horse facilities in the immediate vicinity have been notified of the situation. The horses are under the care of a veterinarian.
Following an investigation, the Animal Health Service (GD) has confirmed that the case at this location involves EHV1, a strain of equine rhinopneumonitis that can manifest as cold-like symptoms, abortion, and/or neurological symptoms.
Rhinopneumonia is a common disease in Europe. Every year, the virus reemerges somewhere. Preventing direct contact between horses is an important preventive measure. Horses become infected through the respiratory tract, and the virus can also be transmitted by humans via clothing and hands. Careful stable hygiene is essential.
